Aspectos da estrutura populacional de Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris (Linnaeus, 1766) após manejo de controle populacional na Lagoa Maior em Três Lagoas - MS

Abstract

The capybara is a species that adapts easily to various types of habitats, added to the absence of natural predators and short gestation period, it starts to have rapid and uncontrolled growth, a factor that contributed to the overpopulation of the species in Lagoa Maior and Três Lagoas - MS, making it necessary to move part of the population to another area. In this work, the remaining population was monitored to verify the carrying capacity of the site, the behavior, and the quantification of individuals, to analyze the changes that occurred after the management. This follow-up was done through monthly counts, between december 2021 and april 2022, of adult individuals and pups, and through sexing. It was concluded that the species maintained its reproductive behavior, the carrying capacity of the site was maintained within the parameters established in the Technical Environmental Project, and a six times greater number of females than males, indicating that there will be no decline in the population at the site.
