Abstract: Distillation is one of the most widely used separation operations in the chemical industry, especially in processes involving liquid mixtures with different volatilities. This study aimed to optimize a binary distillation column by integrating thermodynamic modeling, the McCabe–Thiele method and a genetic algorithm. The benzene–toluene and ethanol–water mixtures were evaluated considering different feed and distillate compositions. The vapor–liquid equilibrium curves were constructed using the Antoine equation and the modified Raoult’s law, with activity coefficients applied to represent deviations from ideality. The McCabe–Thiele method was used to estimate the number of theoretical stages and to graphically represent the separation. Then, a genetic algorithm was applied to optimize the feed factor and the reflux ratio, considering an objective function associated with the total heat duty and the operating cost related to the column trays. The results indicated that the algorithm was able to identify operating conditions consistent with the restrictions imposed on the model. For the benzene–toluene system, a more regular behavior was observed, with lower variation in the number of theoretical stages and in the total heat duty. For the ethanol–water system, its non-ideality and proximity to the azeotropic region resulted in greater sensitivity to the decision variables. The McCabe–Thiele diagrams made it possible to verify the graphical consistency of the operating lines and of the calculated stages. Therefore, it is concluded that the proposed methodology was suitable for optimizing the operating conditions of the column, identifying combinations of feed factor and reflux ratio compatible with the model restrictions and with the reduction of the objective function associated with energy consumption and the number of theoretical stages.
