Abstract: In view of the need for further studies aimed at the removal of heavy metals from domestic and industrial effluents, this work aimed to test the potential phytoextractor of chromium III and arsenic oxide solutions by Pontederia parviflora Alexander. The first plant survival test experiment was assembled using 6 different concentrations of the metals. The concentrations were 10 and 25 mg.L-1 of arsenic, 390 and 410 mg.L-1 of chromium and the mixture of both metals, totaling 190 and 555 mg.L-1. The samples were carried out in triplicate and the contact with the metals was of 7 days. The control of environmental variables was done by measuring pH and room temperature every day. Pontederia parviflora showed better tolerance for arsenic, surviving throughout the experiment, however for chromium, it showed sing of senescence in the last days. For the phytoextraction test, were sent to the laboratory the samples of the plants in contact with the metals and the control solution’s plant. Samples of the solutions before and after the experiment were also sent to the laboratory. The results showed great absorption of both metals by the plant. The concentrations of arsenic showed a removal of almost 100%, remaining in the final solution only 0.036 and 0.233 mg.L-1. The mixture of metals resulted in the removal of 85.60% and 73.37% respectively for the concentrations of 190 and 555 mg.L-1. On the other hand, chromium presented a removal of about 50%, with final concentration at 189.90 mg.L-1. Therefore, considering the difference in concentration of the two metals, Pontederia parviflora Alexandre presents a better removal of chromium from the solutions.
