| Resumo: | A obra de J. R. R. Tolkien tem sido exaustivamente analisada, dada a relevância que representa para os estudos literários. Seus textos de fantasia, além de proporcionarem entretenimento, geralmente, exploram símbolos e arquétipos que estabelecem paralelos com as vidas de pessoas de diferentes culturas e, por essa razão, mantêm-se contemporâneos, suscitando o desenvolvimento de diversas pesquisas em diversas áreas de conhecimento. Sendo assim, o principal objetivo deste trabalho é analisar a representação de Gandalf, o Cinzento, de acordo com a construção arquetípica do velho sábio elaborada por Tolkien, em O Hobbit (2012). Nesse sentido, foi feito um estudo aprofundado das relações entre três termos específicos: “fantástico”, “maravilhoso” e “fantasia”, os quais se relacionam entre si, apesar de se diferenciarem em vários aspectos. Para esse fim, consideramos os trabalhos de Tzvetan Todorov (2010) e de David Roas (2014), entre outros teóricos e críticos desses tópicos. Além disso, a perspectiva teórica de nossas análises se concentra, predominantemente, na teoria dos arquétipos de Carl Gustav Jung (2014) e no estudo da mitologia de Joseph Campbell (2021). Também foi levado em consideração um estudo sobre o autor e, especialmente, de seus trabalhos críticos que tratam de seus pareceres sobre sua própria obra e sobre a fantasia e de dois estudiosos de sua obra, Ronald Eduard Kyrmse (2003) e Humphrey Carpenter (2018). Dessa maneira, com base nesses pressupostos, foram discutidas as características do arquétipo do velho sábio em paralelo com as de Gandalf ao longo da jornada de Bilbo Bolseiro na história, a qual ajudou-o a desenvolver sua força e harmonia interior em um difícil percurso. Por fim, compreendemos que O Hobbit é um romance que oportuniza o amadurecimento interior não apenas das personagens do enredo, mas, também, de seus leitores, os quais, muitas vezes intuem os símbolos e arquétipos que ali estão e identificam-nos com características de suas próprias vidas. |
| Abstract: | J.R.R. Tolkien’s work has been exhaustively analyzed, given the relevance it represents for literary studies. His fantasy texts, in addition to providing entertainment, generally explore symbols and archetypes that establish parallels with the lives of people from different cultures and, for this reason, remain contemporary, prompting the development of various research in various areas of knowledge. Therefore, the main objective of this work is to analyze the representation of Gandalf the Grey, according to the archetypal construction of the wise old man elaborated by Tolkien, in The Hobbit (2012). In this sense, an in-depth study was made of the relationships between three specific terms: “fantastic”, “wonderful” and “fantasy”, which are related to each other, despite differing in several aspects. To that end, we consider the works of Tzvetan Todorov (2010) and David Roas (2014), among other theorists and critics of these topics. In addition, the theoretical perspective of our analyzes focuses predominantly on Carl Gustav Jung’s theory of archetypes (2014) and Joseph Campbell’s study of mythology (2021). A study of the author and, especially, of his critical works that deal with his opinions on his own work and on fantasy and two scholars of his work, Ronald Eduard Kyrmse (2003) and Humphrey Carpenter (2018) were also considered. In this way, based on these assumptions, the characteristics of the archetype of the wise old man were discussed in parallel with those of Gandalf throughout Bilbo Baggins’ journey in history, which helped him to develop his strength and inner harmony in a difficult journey. Finally, we understand that The Hobbit is a novel that facilitates the inner maturation not only of the characters in the plot, but also of its readers, who often intuit the symbols and archetypes that are there and identify them with characteristics of their own lives. |
